Parents Helping Parents seeks a growth oriented and outgoing Executive Director to lead the organization through a period of transition as it continues to strategically define and expand its services. PHP is a financially stable, well-respected, $.8M non-profit human service corporation committed to parents in need of support in Massachusetts.

PHP operates with the underlying belief that good parenting is the fundamental right of every child, and the greatest legacy we can give them. For 38 years the organization has supported parents and prevented child abuse and helped families cope with an increasingly complex world. PHP aspires to expand the impact and number of its highly regarded, confidential programs for parents and expand its brand recognition and revenue base as part of a sustainable organization.

Opportunities and Challenges

The new CEO joins the organization at a very important time. As PHP grows to the next level of organizational development, the chief executive, along with the board, will have the challenge of strategically assessing programs, business lines, and community needs, while maintaining internal controls. Together, the CEO and the board will evaluate and adjust the business model as they grow the organization. This demands generating resources to meet the needs of the present without compromising the future.

Marketing will be a key challenge. It is important that partner organizations, funders, PHP’s community of parents, caregivers, and volunteers, as well as the public fully understand who we are, what we do, how we do it, and why we do it. Building and creatively utilizing technology, including social media, to facilitate communication, attract a wider group and next generation of parents, increase efficiency, and enhance the future of the organization within budget will be an essential part of meeting that challenge.

PHP emphasizes parent leadership in the mutual support groups and the governance of the organization. The governing board is a sixteen-person Board of Directors, one-third of whom are parent group members. The board is currently developing a renewed governance structure to support a healthy transition and future for the organization. 

Continuing to build financial resources for PHP is paramount. The next Executive Director will need to play an active role in fundraising, build the development infrastructure and culture, as well as help the Board continue its strategic recruitment of new Board members, assuring that the Directors have a keen understanding of their fundraising responsibilities and a clear grasp of the key and essential role that fundraising plays in the success of a nonprofit.

As the next chief executive moves PHP forward, he or she should embrace and cultivate the important values of compassion, respect and integrity that have been nurtured from the organization’s beginning.


The Executive Director serves as chief executive officer, leads a four to six-person staff team and approximately 70 volunteers, and as such, reports to the Board of Directors and has overall responsibility for the strategic, financial, programmatic, and management operations of the organization. In addition to internal management functions, the Executive Director serves as primary ambassador to the broader community: raising funds; cultivating relationships with donors; engaging with other community agencies and representing the community we serve. 

The Executive Director provides strategic leadership assuring that the organization has a long-range strategy and sustainable business model which achieves its mission, and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress. Building on PHP’s positive reputation, the chief executive works with the board and management team to identify and set priorities, areas for improvement, and opportunities for institutional growth and increased impact. In addition, s/he manages relationships with the board, and helps identify potential new board members and assists in their recruitment, orientation and ongoing engagement in their board responsibilities.

The chief executive oversees all company communications including web site and public relations/marketing efforts in conjunction with the staff and consultants. The executive is responsible for raising the profile of PHP through ongoing networking,  and interaction with foundation representatives, academic leaders, nonprofit agency representatives, and community and business leaders. 

In revenue and fund development, the Executive Director creates and expands fund development efforts, including cultivation and stewardship of individual, foundation and corporate donors. In partnership with the board and resource development consultant s/he will provide leadership in developing and implementing plans and strategies to meet funding needs.

Internally, the Executive Director leads and supports the staff team, fosters trust and maintains positive morale and a sense of teamwork among all staff and volunteers, and ensures required skills and competencies and a culture of accountability; this includes maintaining a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff with strong leadership skills. 


The Executive Director must be both a strategist and strong manager with the ability to lead and inspire staff, volunteers and community. A passion for solving problems and working with parents and community partners is key, as is being respectful and culturally sensitive to members of all races, genders, classes, and those of different abilities.  

The Board of Directors is seeking a highly motivated person of integrity who is able to build trust, create safe places for parents to talk and be heard, and promote and support leadership in others; an effective communicator who values transparency and who inspires others to work collaboratively toward a common goal.

The ideal candidate will possess the following professional and personal qualities:


  • At least five years experience in a nonprofit senior leadership position and at least a Bachelor’s degree.

  • Three years experience in the delivery of human services. 

  • Demonstrated ability to build the capacity of an organization and adapt an organization to the evolving needs of the community it serves.

  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate positive relationships with funders and donors, and success in revenue generation.

  • Strong nonprofit financial management skills, including fund accounting, budgeting and financial analysis. 

  • Experience serving as the outward face of an organization; success bringing visibility to an organization; public relations or marketing experience using social media; ability to tell the story of the organization.

  • Adept at the use of technology to share knowledge both internally and externally and to use data to guide planning.

  • Ability in public speaking, clear and effective written and oral communication and effective group skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to function in an open, collaborative environment and foster teamwork.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage people; include staff in planning, make oneself available to staff; provide regular performance feedback; develop subordinates’ skills and encourage growth.

  • Experience in nonprofit board development and supporting board leadership; skilled at building a balanced Board/ED team.


  • Experience developing new revenue streams which support program operations.

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in building relationships/partnerships outside of the organization.

  • Experience with the government and foundation funders of Massachusetts.

  • Experience and familiarity with the human service network of Massachusetts, or non-profit work experience in a similar environment.


The compensation package is based on meeting job qualifications and is competitive with comparable nonprofit organizations in the region. PHP offers a competitive benefit package.
